The design/build contract is for the overhaul of the 3.5 km-long runway "Piste 2" at Henri Coanda International Airport in Bucharest-Otopeni, Romania's largest airport. The contract involves milling off the asphalt from the existing concrete surface, overhauling the concrete runway and newly resurfacing the runway with asphalt. The drainage system for rainwater will also be replaced, along with the entire electrical fittings and lighting system.
The overhaul will be carried out in three phases. The runway will remain in use during the works on the first 950 m section. It will then be closed completely to air traffic for 40 days for the overhaul of the middle section of the runway. After this, the runway will be reopened and the remaining 1090 m section resurfaced.
PORR has thereby secured its fourth large-scale contract for airfield construction in Romania, reflecting the popularity gained Europe-wide from specialising in runway construction. This is just the latest confirmation of the construction company's role as a leader in airfield construction: in addition to projects in Romania, recent runway overhauls have been successfully completed at Cologne Airport in Germany and Salzburg Airport in Austria.
