Expressway S1 PORR wins another infrastructure contract in Poland

Vienna/Warsaw, 18.05.2020 – A consortium of PORR S.A. (lead) and Mota-Engil Central Europe has signed a contract with Poland’s General Directorate for National Roads and Motorways (GDDKiA) to design and build the 15km-long section of the S1 expressway from Oświęcim to Dankowice. It is the longest of the three sections planned as part of the new S1 between Mysłowice and Bielsko-Biała. The contract is worth approx. EUR 217m (PLN 989.7m).

“The section of the S1 motorway between Mysłowice and Bielsko-Biała is part of a major trans-European transport network and is of great importance for the Silesian agglomeration area. With this project we are once again proving our expertise in the field of infrastructure construction and, together with Mota-Engil, we are contributing to a major international transport link between the eastern and southern countries of Europe”, said PORR CEO, Karl-Heinz Strauss.

The consortium consisting of PORR and Mota-Engil Central Europe signed a contract that covers the design and construction of a dual-carriage expressway in asphalt construction with two lanes in each direction and space reserved for a third lane (in the central reservation) with a total length of around 15 km. The new road will be equipped with rest and service areas, devices for road traffic safety, environmental protection, dewatering systems and road lighting. Three new intersections will be built on the road – Oświęcim, Wola, Brzeszcze. The contract also provides for the construction of roads running parallel to the expressway and the road connections to adjacent areas.

Works are expected to take 33 months (without the winter periods). Road works will begin in the third quarter of 2021. The project is set for completion in the third quarter of 2023.

The contract for the section from Oświęcim to Dankowice represents the first tender awarded out of three announced by GDDKiA’s office in Katowice for the construction of the S1 expressway, running from the Kosztowy II interchange in Mysłowice to the Suchy Potok interchange in Bielsko-Biała. The total length of the three tenders amounts to 40 km – it is the longest of the S1 sections planned for new construction or extension.
