The high-pressure gas pipeline that PORR is building on behalf of the state-owned GAZ-SYSTEM between Kolnik and Gdańsk has a length of 34 km and a diameter of 1 m. This is a key component of the ambitious FSRU programme (Floating Storage Regasification Unit), which involves building a floating LNG terminal in the Gdańsk area. The terminal will receive large quantities of liquefied natural gas delivered by tankers. From there, the natural gas will be distributed across Poland via a network of pipelines.
The Kolnik-Gdańsk section is the first onshore section of the pipeline system. PORR will complete this special order in just 25 months with a contract worth EUR 90.5m.
Sustainably safeguarding energy supply
“The construction of the gas pipeline is an important step towards strengthening and stabilising Polish and European energy infrastructure. By connecting the pipeline network to the LNG terminal, we’re creating new supply routes. This will reduce dependency on individual suppliers and further diversify the energy supply”, says Karl-Heinz Strauss, CEO of PORR.
As a high-pressure pipeline, the new section must be able to withstand a gas operating pressure of 8.4 MPa. It will run through a total of five municipalities in the Pomeranian Voivodeship: Gdańsk, Pruszcz Gdański, Cedry Wielkie, Suchy Dąb and Pszczółki. The contract also includes an FSRU measuring station and fibre-optic cable.
“PORR is applying its extensive experience in pipeline construction in Poland”, said Strauss. PORR has already successfully implemented more than 300 km of pipelines for GAZ-SYSTEM over the course of several projects, comprehensively demonstrating its expertise. The construction of the Kolnik–Gdańsk section continues this successful cooperation.
