Everything flows
The new bypass with a total length of 11.08 km starts at the existing roundabout of the DN69 and the northern ramp of the Arad South junction. It improves the traffic flow as well as the road connections in this strategic area, as the national road was also connected. To this end, the CF 218 railway line from Timișoara North to Arad was crossed, as was the Mures River.
Flyovers, crossings and connections
The feasibility study "Modernisation of the Caransebeș - Timișoara - Arad railway line" forms the basis for the new three span railway overpass. The specifications set out in the study include execution of new railway infrastructure and double track railway along the entire length, ensuring that the comprehensive modernisation plans for the entire railway network are taken into account during the construction of the overpass. The construction project will thus improve traffic flow and road safety.
For the 1,116 m bridge over Mureș river, requirements of the water authority had to be taken into account. These stipulate that embankments and abutments
are not placed in the floodable main riverbed. Furthermore, an intelligent lighting system is integrated that adapts its intensity to the natural light. This innovation optimises energy consumption and increases road safety.
Outstanding performance
The project aimed to sustainably improve the quality of life in the region by reducing pollution and emissions through the rerouting of heavy goods traffic. At the same time, noise pollution in residential areas was significantly reduced. In addition, measures to optimise traffic flow helped to reduce congestion on main roads and shorten journey times. Increasing road safety and reducing the risk of accidents are the cornerstones of construction planning for a busy road like this.
This involved 138,000 cubic metres of excavation, 303,000 cubic metres of fill material and 23,300 cubic metres of concrete for the structures. The new bypass was completed in just 14 months, beating the agreed deadline by five months. An outstanding achievement by our teams.
