PORR played a major role in the new and extended central railway infrastructure at Berlin's central railway station. Our tasks included completing the structural work, the mass-spring systems and integrating the slab track system.

The east-west link and parts of the north-south link were created using the Rheda 2000 system and the ballastless Slab Track Austria system developed by PORR and ÖBB, which is based on elastically supported track base plates. The 5.6km east-west line was built during 2001 and 2002, partly as slab track and partly as a special steel construction. It includes 25 bridge support structures, four rail switches, six rail expansion joints and 50 roadway transitions. The north-south line, built between 2002 and 2005, has no less than 49 switches in its 21km length. A 9km section of this line runs into a new tunnel. A total of 902 track slabs were installed for the two projects.

The joint area presented particular challenges due to the need for special structures. PORR was able to deploy its expertise and innovative approach effectively, and so complete this challenge successfully. In addition to building the slab track system, the project also included execution planning and obtaining the required official permissions.
