High-quality training locations for young trainee employees.

The new ÖBB training workshop built by PORR in Salzburg-Gnigl as part of a general contractor contract accommodates all functional areas necessary for training activities, which were previously spread over several buildings. The building comprises three building structures – the ground floor block, the upper floor block and the assembly hall connected to these building structures. The building was built on pile foundations given the local ground conditions. The rising supporting structure was produced from reinforced concrete and the walls and ceiling of the supporting construction executed for the most part in exposed concrete. The façade design relies on a fine division and spatial differentiation of the building structures, which are kept formally simple.

This was achieved by consciously placed openings, different colours and different types of surface structures with simple means: The ground floor with its dark brown, rough-plastered façade forms the massive base for the floor block floating above, retained in brilliant white. Its plastering has, according to its different functions, a finer structure from that of the assembly hall also retained in white. The heating and hot water system – specifically designed as CO2 neutral – of the training workshop comes from a solar plant on the roof with a gross collector area of around 150m², whose energy is stored in the floor panel and the intermediate floor of the building.
