From a listed production facility to a modern educational centre

The listed canning and pea peeling factory in Bruckneudorf, which was designed as an industrial yard and housed all production processes under one roof until the First World War, is one of the most beautiful historic industrial buildings in Austria. Over a construction period of just under three years, the building, which had been partially disused since the 1960s, was transformed into a new educational centre with a new main square for the community on the 4.2 hectare site. The "Erbse" thus combines modern infrastructure with historical charm.

In the first construction phase, the school with twelve classrooms and a gymnasium as well as a cultural centre with a restaurant were built in the listed building. The spacious open space in front of the building is designed as a social meeting place and communication centre for all generations in the village. It is surrounded by a terraced housing complex with 30 units, several residential complexes with 120 flats and an underground car park as well as offices, shops and restaurants. In addition, a sacred building and the conversion of the 43-metre-high concrete silos into residential buildings with 70 flats and a sky bar on the top floor were also realised.

One focus was on preserving the old building stock as far as possible and equipping it with modern technology. In the spirit of sustainability, the focus was on environmentally friendly energy from district heating and renewable electricity from photovoltaic systems. The materials obtained during the renovation work were also reused. Without further soil sealing and urban sprawl in rural areas, an industrial site steeped in history has been preserved and made usable for future generations. With the transformation of the Erbse, the team has succeeded in creating a prime example of the sustainable use of historical buildings, which is groundbreaking for construction projects in the town centre.
