PORR at the EURO 2008

To accommodate the requested 30,000 spectators during the EURO 2008 as well as install 900 additional media seats, the Salzburg Football Stadium needed to be extended by another tier with 13,500 seats. In summer 2005, the ARGE EURO 2008 with PORR in a leading role, was commissioned with this extension. 

The existing stadium’s architecture had been characterised by a heavy, timber-clad wall as well as a translucent roof. Due to its special location and proximity to the historic Klessheim Castle, the pitch had been lowered back then to reduce the building’s overall height.

The extension consisting of an upper tier and the respective distribution level was attached on top of the existing stadium as an sectioned steel construction. This resulted in a ring-shaped, roofed distribution level accessed via exterior stair towers. To allow for the installation of the new upper tier, the existing stadium roof needed to be raised by 10.5m. The original plan was to remove the roof, store it in an appropriate place and re-install it once the upper tier had been installed. Due to time pressure and to not hinder ongoing operations, a variant was worked out in which the entire stadium roof could be lifted hydraulically in one piece.

The new upper tier was executed as a steel construction. This construction method involves V-pillars and truss beams that serve as the supporting construction for the light aluminium stands. These, in turn, were built from L-shaped longitudinal extrusion pressed profiles and intermediate cross profiles.

The new upper distribution tier housing the infrastructure for the upper tier (kiosks, sanitary facilities and steward rooms) is likewise a supporting steel construction on which a hollow-core slab was installed. The upper stands are accessed via exterior stair towers / access bridges leading to the circumferential distributor area.
