Water & Steel: New connection for Linz

The new Danube bridge with its impressive steel arches is a new landmark of the city of Linz. It connects the people in the Urfahr district with the city centre. Regardless of whether they are travelling on foot, by public transport, car or bicycle. Within three years, PORR constructed the 400-metre-long and, in parts, around 34-metre-wide structure as a steel symbol of the importance and expansion of public transport.

Brilliant achievement: the float-in. The preparations for floating in the river support structures were made on a 15,000m2 pre-assembly site next to the Danube. This was followed by the use of special equipment from Holland that is normally only seen in television documentaries. Two 900hp push boats, four floating pontoons, hydraulic lifting and lowering equipment and four modular vehicles with their own propulsion were used to position the bridge structures. With a length of up to 120m and a weight of 2,800t for the bridge arches, this was a huge achievement for everyone involved.

Eye-catcher: the steel composite structure. Designed by the French architecture firm Marc Mimram Architecte, the bridge is not only a work of art, but also has a lot to offer technically. Various complex challenges had to be overcome during construction, such as the foundations of the bridge in the Danube. The two river structures were also welded together on site piece by piece in a modular system. At around 8,400t, the impressive steel structure accounts for almost half of the bridge's total weight. This means it weighs even more than the steel of the Eiffel Tower in Paris.
