Fire damage restoration.

A production facility with an area of over 2,000m² burned down entirely in a large fire at 3M Precision Grinding GmbH in Villach in March 2018. The fire also destroyed numerous surrounding buildings. PORR Umwelttechnik GmbH was commissioned to immediately clear the fire damage.

The main aim of the restoration works was to dismantle and dispose of the parts of the buildings that had suffered fire damage and were in danger of collapsing. All the equipment relevant to production and worth preserving was, in consultation with the client, roughly cleaned and then prepared for transport.

Dismantling twelve batch furnaces and two tunnel furnaces posed a particular challenge.

Remediation as well as dismantling measures were necessary because the site was contaminated with friable asbestos. The decontamination plan for this was drawn up in consultation with the chemical construction supervisor and the site coordinator, and implemented strictly.

In the last step, the remaining components of the former furnace hall were dismantled and the masonry of the adjacent production facilities was coated with a weather-resistant seal.
