Sustainable campus for Applied Nursing Sciences

The student population is consistently growing, which also translates to a rising demand for space. This is why FH Campus Wien is expanding its location in Favoritenstraße to become Science City. Since February 2023, the second extension building with approx. 42,000m² gross floor area has been under construction. Some of the study and further education programmes will be located in the new extension. The research activities of the Department of Applied Nursing Science and the Department of Health Sciences will also be brought together under one roof.

Sustainable energy supply for Science City. A geothermal energy system is planned for a sustainable and efficient supply of heating and cooling. In order to cover as much of the required demand as possible, deep probes of 190m are planned. The available space below the base plate of the building will also be fully utilised.

As part of the preliminary investigations, a thermal response test was also carried out, which was incorporated into the water law authorisation and the simulation of the plant. In a construction period of 6 months, PORR Bau GmbH - Specialised Civil Engineering Department produced a total of 140 geothermal probes with a total length of approx. 27km. The installed geothermal system covers 85% of the new building's heating requirements and 75% of its cooling requirements. To this end, provides the building with around 1,350 kW of heating capacity or 2,250 MWh of heating energy and 1,000 kW of cooling capacity or 1,450 MWh of cooling energy. The 140 deep probes were connected at a total of seven distribution points in the basement. From there, collecting pipes run underneath the floor slab to the energy centre.
