PORR to build important section of S16

Vienna/Warsaw, 03.07.2024 - The General Directorate for National Roads and Motorways (GDDKiA) in Poland has commissioned PORR to upgrade another section of the S16. The existing 18 km-long section of the DK16 from Barczewo to Biskupiec will be converted into an expressway. As part of the contract, PORR will also build a second traffic lane. The contract, worth around EUR 86m (PLN 372m), includes recycling the old asphalt and installing a lighting for the intersections, that uses renewable energy sources.

“The S16 will be the backbone of the region within the Polish road system and is important for Europe as a whole. We are proud to build what is now the second section of this project, from Barczewo to Biskupiec. With its extensive experience in civil engineering and infrastructure construction, PORR is ideally equipped to deliver this contract”, said PORR CEO Karl-Heinz Strauss. Once completed, the S16 will serve as a regional artery for business and tourism. It will connect the regions of Suwałki, Augustów, Ełk, Mrągowo, Olsztyn, Iława and Ostróda. It will also be the shortest route between Berlin and the Baltic states, making it a key link within the Trans-European Transport Network (TEN-T).

Completion in 2028

The 18.2 km section of the expressway will run along the current route of the DK16. In order to convert the existing national road into a motorway, PORR is adding a second carriageway and rebuilding several sections. It is also building additional roads to service adjacent areas. The scope of works additionally includes rebuilding the junctions in Kromerowo and Biskupiec, the construction of a technical building for the maintenance of the expressway in the area of the Biskupiec junction, and a service area near Nowe Marcinkowo.

The construction period is 39 months from the signing of the contract. The first drivers will be able to use the newly built road by mid-2028.

Recycled asphalt and renewable energy

As part of the demolition work on the existing DK16, PORR will recycle the old asphalt and use it as part of the new surface, all while maintaining the highest quality parameters. An intersection lighting system using renewable energy sources is also planned.

The new contract is the second construction lot of the S16 expressway to be built by PORR. It is also building the 16-km section between Borki Wielkie and Mrągowo, including the Mrągowo bypass, whereby the work there is 95% complete. The first construction lot is scheduled for completion in the third quarter of this year.
