“As part of the Via Carpathia, the S19 is an important component of the trans-European transport network. Having been awarded the contract for the construction of the section between Kuźnica and Sokółka, we are making a significant contribution to a better north-south connection between Belarus and Slovakia and once again proving our expertise in infrastructure development,” said PORR CEO Karl-Heinz Strauss.
PORR will be responsible for the northernmost 10.55 km-long section of the S19 expressway, which runs from Kuźnica on the Polish-Belarus border through the Podlaskie Voivodeship to Sokółka. The new route will bypass the centre of Kuźnica in the north and provide the city with sustainable relief from transit traffic.
In addition, the contract also covers the execution of two road interchanges - Kuźnica and Sokółka Północ – as well as the construction of 12 engineering structures, including a bridge and a railway viaduct. The start of construction works is scheduled for the third quarter of 2022, after obtaining permission for implementing a road project (ZRID). The commissioning of the approximately 175 km-long Podlachian section of the S19 is planned for 2025.
Important section of the trans-European transport network
The S19 expressway will connect the cities of Hrodna, Białystok, Lublin, Rzeszów and Košice and, with a total length of 570km, will serve as a major north-south link between Belarus and Slovakia, as well as being an important section of the international motorway network, Via Carpathia.
